So far, we have received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from users with a regular feature phone. Hundreds of users have sent us spontaneous ‘Thank you’ notes and messages, such as ‘you make me feel like I own a smart phone’. So Squace has significantly improved their mobile internet experience.
We have also been demonstrating the Squace concept to many business users with smart phone devices such as iPhone and Blackberry. Some of them said that they could not wait to have Squace on their phone, some just wanted to find out more and a fewwere sceptical.
We are now happy to announce that we are ready to release Squace on iPhone and Blackberry to a wider audience. This underlines our objectives of being the best Universal Mobile Interface solution globally and providing content and service providers a unique opportunity to interact with their target audience based on their behaviour rather than their device type.. With our 360º distribution engine we also make it easy for B2B, B2C and D2C business’s to go mobile leveraging their existing internet services.
The Squace UMI design is now tuned to different types of handsets. A touch screen device asks for different type of interactions than a non-touch screen device. Untilnow we have been testing with a closed community who gave us invaluable feedback. For example, we have now introduced the Toggle function between a Grid view (excellent in remote control devices) and the list view (often better on a touch screen device).

Today we have submitted the our iPhone and Blackberry versions to Apple andBlackberry World. If you would like to be notified once the Applications are available in the Appstores just sign up as a regular user and you’ll get notified.

In the meantime you can install the software on your device via an intermediate procedure. Click here.
We look forward to continue receiving your feedback and suggestions; learning from new users ensures that Squace is as good as it can be!.
Each device platform provides us with key learning’s and user interaction improvements so that these new design or interaction functions can be incorporated into the new device types and platforms of the future. One good example of this are the lesson’s we learned in testing the Squace Android client that are now incorporated into the new iPhone version. Check them out!

The market opportunity for a universal mobile interface and a review of the Squace solution

At Squace we’re glad to announce the new research white paper from Ovum’s Knowledge Center at Ovum Europe Limited.

Executive summary

The adoption rate of mobile devices in all their forms as the main interface to web-based services and content has been phenomenal, with the launch of Apple’s iPhone being the fastest ever adoption of new technology.

Ovum estimates that consumer mobile broadband users will grow from 152 million in 2008 to 1.9 billion in 2014 as consumers’ use of the Internet dwarfs that of the enterprise. Likewise use of 3G mobile devices generally is set to exceed 3 billion over the same timescale.

However, the delivery of services and content is hindered by the wide variety of platforms and device manufacturers and the closed, proprietary nature of these ecosystems. Because applications and data may look or behave differently on different platforms the providers and distributors either have to tune them for each platform or make difficult decisions about which one to concentrate on.

There are different types of platform. Some are closed and run by the manufacturer such as Apple’s iPhone; some are based on an operating system such as the Symbian; some are device specific; and some, such as Google’s recent entry of Android, are being adopted by a wide variety of handset manufacturers. Content similarly comes in different forms: some through content portals that have generally been provided by mobile operators and some through app stores that may be device specific or more open.

From the user’s perspective this introduces barriers to switching between devices and platforms with the potential loss of content and inconsistency of interface. From a mobile marketing provider, and the providers of applications and content more generally, this increases the cost of delivery and support, and reduces the potential return on investment.

The user community now has an insatiable desire for more and better applications and services that are easy to use and make the sharing of content and social interaction easy and consistent. Users require services that eliminate the barrier between what they could do on their desktop and what they do on their mobile device, and which let them move seamlessly between the two.

The jungle of options is a barrier that can only be eliminated through the widespread adoption of standards and a consistent portable interface. Squace has launched a universal mobile interface (UMI) that provides such a consistent well thought out interface that it has ported to the majority of mobile platforms and devices. The UMI has a number of major benefits for developers, operators, and users alike, of which the following are key:

The interface is consistent on all mobile devices.

Users can publish and share content with ease.

There is one integration point for developers of applications and content distributors.

A cloud-based server provides support that automates the publication of content and eases device mobility between alternative mobile or desk-based Internet devices.

Squace is adopting a wide approach to market penetration. It offers a downloadable client that has been installed over 600,000 times to date, and is building up a channels strategy amongst key identified markets including online communities, the retail and travel industries, and the suppliers of directory and contact services. They are also recruiting technology partners across a wide spectrum. Notable early successes are with the content management systems EPiServer and WordPress.

Squace has to date been built on modest venture funding and expects to break even in the second half of 2011.

Ovum believes that Squace’s UMI provides an excellent opportunity to help business to business (B2B) organizations develop applications and offer content that is easy to distribute and easy for users to adopt and use. We also think that the community will greatly appreciate the ease of switching between devices and the elimination of barriers between desktop and mobile Internet usage.

Although all of us at Squace have been quiet for a while, rest assured we have been very busy in the background and so we are delighted to announce that, despite difficult market conditions, we have secured sufficient funding to take Squace to the next level of development.

In December 2009 Morgan Stanley released an extensive Mobile Internet Report in which they forecast that Internet on the mobile will become mainstream in the second half of 2010. In August 2009 the Aberdeen Group also released a report on the growth of Mobile Marketing and Advertising in which they made clear that for this sector to fulfill it’s expected exponential revenue growth, that the ability to target audiences on behavioral data rather than on types of mobile devices would be critical. By applying the Universal Mobile Interface principles to our strategy as of day one, Squace is well positioned to ride the wave of a dynamic emerging market.

We have benefited from constructive feedback as a result of more than 600.000 downloads of preliminary versions of our product and subsequently have gained extensive and valuable input from the users about what they truly value in Squace and what they would like to see extra for the future.

Our mantra is that it is fundamental that the user is in command. It will always be a user’s decision as to which bookmarks are on deck for instant mobile access. Although the vast majority of feature phone users are very satisfied with a personalized universal solution, those consumers who opt to use smart phones devices, such as iPhone, Android and Blackberry, want to have a solution that matches the ‘feel’ of their ‘expensive’ device. Most early users also informed us that they appreciate the embedded sharing capabilities of Squace. Many of them even would love to see us adding more functionality to the contact book in such a way that it would become a single starting point for multiple ways of communication, such as call, email, social messaging, twitter, etcetera.

This week we have launched an update for our current users in which we have fixed quite a few bugs and added new functionalities, which will ease the process of adding bookmarks into Squace whilst just browsing from a regular PC. Also this week we launched our testing process on Blackberry and Android touch screen devices. An iPhone version will follow very shortly.

In the forthcoming period we aim to release a lot of new features on Squace related to optimizing the user experience. People who are interested in the details can participate in Squace Labs.

Dedicated test communities are helping us to get the best product out. Click here, if you want to be involved.

You are more than welcome!
